Welcome to my online Family Tree!
This site centers around the the union of
Coward J Phillips & Samantha Arthur,
and their family histories, present and past.
I began research into my family in 2002, and we recently began researching the Phillip's
family also. Some of the surnames being researched are:
Phillips, Oakes, Daugherty, Carroll, Ward, Harmon,
Hyden, Williams, & Arthur.
These are surnames from both sides.
Take your time and look around my site. I have spent countless hours gathering the information I
have so far. I believe most of the information I have here to be accurate, but if you find anything
that you believe is not, feel free to contact me. Genealogy research is a never-ending endeavor,
so this is a work-in-progress. Your contributions may be of assist in collecting information
that may bridge a gap to interesting information for us all.
I was recently able to track one
family line all the way back to Germany with the birth of Theobald David Pfautz in Rohrback, Rhenish, Palatinate, Germany in 1722. Spelling with the last name was changed to Fouts, probably either by misspelling in immigration records, to make the name easier to spell or pronounce, or to improve their employment opportunities as German-Americans.
Another family line goes back to England with the immigration of Wm (William) Alsup in 1682 at the age of 22. William's father, George Alsup, had previous immigrated to the United States (when William was 6 years old) in 1667 at the age of 36. William's great granddaughter, Lucy was the first to marry into the Hyden family!
If anyone has any additional information, photos (especially old ones), documents, stories, or
anything they would like to share, please feel free to contact me through the website or by
emailing me at lisa.milanese@outlook.com. Any help in my research would be greatly appreciated.
Please visit & sign the guestbook & leave a message for other family members if you
wish.
PHILLIPS- Welsh: a patronymic surname
meaning "son of Phillip."
Alternate Surname Spellings: PHILIPS, PHILLIP, PHILIP
The surname Phillips and its many variations are believed to be patronymic surnames, which mean they were originally derived from the male first name Philip or Phillip. Adding an "s" to the end of Philip or Phillip causes the name to mean "son of Philip" or "son of Phillip."
The website Behind the Name states that the first name Philip or Phillip is from the Greek: "Philippos", a compound of "philein", to love, and "hippos", horse. Hence, "lover of horses" or "friend of horses."
One of the first recorded spellings of the Phillips surname with a "Ph" is shown to be that of Alicia Philippes, which was dated 1273, in the "Hundred Rolls of Huntingdonshire", during the reign of King Edward I, known as "The Hammer of the Scots", 1272 - 1307.
